Description (From Goodreads): In my debut novel, Breathe, Sadie may have fallen in love with the teen rock star, Jax Stone, but readers fell head over heels for Marcus Hardy. This is his story…
Marcus Hardy had hoped to enjoy a year away at college while he put the summer he’d rather forget behind him. But instead, he’s jerked right back to the coastal town of Sea Breeze, Alabama due to a family crisis. His dear ol' dad found himself a girlfriend only a few years older than Marcus. So now his sister needs help dealing with their mother who is mentally falling apart. The only bright spot to returning is the fascinating red head who sleeps over several times a week. The problem is she's sleeping in bed with his new roommate, Cage Watson.
Willow “Low” Foster needs a place to live. Running to Cage’s apartment every time her sister kicks her out isn’t exactly a long term solution. Juggling her courses at the local community college and a part time job doesn’t produce excess income. But Cage has a new roommate and suddenly sleeping over at her best friend’s apartment isn’t such a bad thing. Not when she gets to see those sexy green eyes of Marcus Hardy’s twinkle when he smiles at her like he wants her there.
Even though Cage seems a little territorial where Low is concerned, Marcus finds time to spend with Low without upsetting his roommate. Cage may use his small college baseball star persona to sleep with every hot female in his path but he’s still under the disillusion that when he’s through sowing his wild oats, he’s going to marry Low. Marcus intends to change that assumption for both Cage and Low. Until his carefully laid plans come crashing down with a revelation he never expected. He’ll have to choose between Low or his family. Because once the truth comes out.... there’s no other choice.
My Thoughts: Abbi Glines blew me away in this book. I absolutely loved it. It is the second in her Sea Breeze Series. We all got to know and love Marcus in Breathe, and it was so refreshing to be able to read Marcus' story in Because of Low. He left for college, hoping to get away from the pain he felt because he was so in love with Sadie, but Sadie loved Jax. He was forced to return home to help his mom and sister after an issue arose with his father. He ends up moving in with Cage, who is quite the player, to put it mildly. Marcus tries to help hold things together with his family, as his mom and sister are leaning heavily upon him. One day while alone in the apartment he answers the door and in walks Willow Foster (Low), in tears, with a suitcase in hand, asking for Cage, and Marcus' world as he knows it begins to change, all because of Low.
Abbi has really outdone herself in this love story, and she is so good at writing them. I really loved Marcus in the story, even though I would have liked to slap him a few times. Low was awesome, and I really came to love her character. Low pretty much grew up in the school of hard knocks, and Cage was her best friend who always looked out for her. Despite the fact that he is a player and with a different girl every night, he still insists that he is going to marry Low someday. In spite of all that she has been through, and Low has been through more than her share of suffering, she is so forgiving and caring. Marcus falls hard for Low, and she loves him right back. Abbi knows how to do romance, and she delivers in that area with flying colors. The romance is steamy and intense, in the stop and take a deep breath and bring out the fan kind of way that Abbi is so good at.
We get to find out just how hot, sweet, and swoon worthy Marcus is in this story, though he does need an attitude adjustment a time or two. The chemistry between Marcus and Low is powerful. The story is filled with intense passion and gut wrenching heartache in the face of all the issues Marcus, Low, and their families have to work through. It was really nice to find out what was going on with Sadie and Jax, and the rest of the gang we got to know in Breathe. I wasn't to crazy about Cage, but he did grow on me and I think we will all really come to love him in "While it Lasts," the next book in the Sea Breeze series. Abbi Glines is a great writer, and you can't help but get caught up in the world she creates. This is one of those books you will want to read it in one sitting so be prepared, Because of Low is definitely a good read and I enjoyed it immensely.
