Book Blurb :
In post-apocalypse America, every season, the Circus of Curiosities visits the city, bringing with it the most fantastic circus acts that are beautiful, majestic, curious, and death-defying. Every season performers for these acts are chosen from the young men and women in each town, trained, and sent to perform in a live grand performance, performed literally to the death. Two performers from Sea Cliff, a beach town at the outskirts of The Center find themselves chosen to be in this Summer's Circus Act. Both must win at any cost, but could they ignore their feelings for each other? Leela Sinclair needs to win in order to get to The Center where she can get medical help from the best physicians for her ailing mother, plague with a condition no one have heard of. For Zachary Nile, his reasons for becoming a performer at the Circus is more mysterious.  Only the ringmaster and the Circus of Curiosities owner Dex Hightower (Dr. Dex) knows what the touring Circus is really about amidst the magic and splendor.  Despite the Great War and the poverty surrounding the land except for the towns fortunate enough to be near the Center, Dr. Dex and the Circus performers all know, "The show must go on."

My Thoughts:  In this dystopian fantasy set in post apocalyptic America, Leela Sinclair lives in the small town of Sea Cliff.  Because of the great war against the invaders, Leela's father is missing, whereabouts unknown, and she is left to care for her mother, who has a condition that no one can seem to diagnose, and her little brother.  Food and money are scarce, there are few cars anymore, and even fewer jobs.  Leela works part-time at a small diner in town in order to help make ends meet.  When the Circus of Curiosities comes to town, everyone is intrigued.  This circus is not your typical circus by any means.  In each town young people can sign up to participate in the circus in a series of contests, literally to the death, and the winner gets to go the Center, the hub or capital of America now.  Leela ends up signing up, despite protests from her best friend, Tom and others.  Zachary Nile, a hottie who Leela has always had a crush on signs up also.  Leela and Tom have been friends since they were children, but their relationship is starting to turn into something else, and she finds herself torn between Tom and Zachary.  Meanwhile, it turns out that the mysterious ringmaster of the circus Dr. Dex, knows a lot more about Leela and her family than she realized.  Leela and Zachary soon find that there is a lot more going on than what appears, related to the circus, the Center, the war, and the invaders.  Despite all this, Leela is determined to go through with the competition.  The question is, who will make it to the end?

This was a great book.  I am a big fan of dystopian novels and Circus of Summer did not disappoint.  I really liked Leela.  She was quite the heroine.  The book has similar qualities to The Hunger Games, with the competition to the death between the young people, but was also unique with its own exciting story line.  I had a hard time deciding which guy I was going to root for.  Zachary and Tom were equally hot, and both seemed to love Leela, so I was torn between the two.  The book was fast-paced and entertaining, and I read it in one sitting.  Circus Summer incorporates romance, danger, mystery, and conspiracy, which makes for a really interesting read.  The ending was good and leaves you wanting to know what happens in the next novel.  Kailin Gow has written another great book and if you enjoy YA dystopian fantasy and romance, then this is one book you will want to check out.

  1. Yay! I've been looking for a good dystopian recently, because a lot have been churned out (and not for the better, I should add.) It's great to see a good one out there. I'll have to try to buy it on Amazon.
