An amazing new sci-fi series begins with The Broken Destiny: Book One of The Broken Series.

Ava's People have been exiled to Planet Poseidon, where through a series of horrific events, Ava discovers that their existence has been fabricated by The Council, And She has a Destiny that could save them. Her Soul is a secret weapon that has been lost to an ancient race. To fulfill her destiny Ava needs to go through a series of "changes" that will reveal her true purpose. Throughout her journey she will become what she hates in order to save the ones she loves. And through it all she will find herself - for that is her Destiny, to rise above the fall.

The story continues in the next book Evanescent.

Prologue

Throughout my life I have been searching for something. Something I thought I ought to be. I felt like I was living someone else’s life, waiting for the awakening of my own. Like an empty shell burning for life.

That was until the day I lay dying in the Prince’s chambers. I could no longer feel the pain from the tear in my gut, only the hollowed-out feeling that I had made a huge mistake in assuming that taking my own life would have stopped the ancestor’s spirit from raging out. I gave up, didn’t want to see myself kill the ones I loved. I was the chosen one, and threw it all away for what I thought would be to save a life. Could you end a life to save a life? I did, and have it regretted ever since. I realized then that things like me were not meant to exist. So you ask what it was that had been missing my whole life. It was I. To find myself I had to lose myself, in the worst possible way. The consequences of my actions became the legend of The Broken.

Character interview with Ava and Troy

Ava, can you explain to everyone who “The Broken” are?
Hi Ellen as I understand it - The Broken Kind are genetically enhanced humans. The recipe to the ultimate human discovered on Earth by the ancients. But the recipe has been scattered. The founders of The Broken Species have taken it upon themselves to complete the genetic code -
With every broken recipe comes broken results....

Only two living first generation beings have survived.
Second generation females die giving birth to their first born - or so it appears. Second generation males go insane during puberty.
Male species are created for the purpose of - soldiers, keepers, to control society
Female - species are created for - breeding, council member, keepers and diplomats.
A select few from the Third generations - will go through a "change" during puberty
First and second generations have almost died out.
With the third generation all of this is about to change

Ava, how do you feel about being “The Chosen”?  What can you tell us about the secret weapon that lies within your soul?
Nervously fumbles with buttons on sweater. Well at first I did not want to believe it, not did I want it to be true. It is a hard bitter pill to swallow, as at times it a lonely difficult path that only I can follow” looks to Troy “ Just that knowledge alone has changed me, and brought about fear – Fear is not an option for me anymore.” shakes head and looks down.
“Fear only weakens my abilities, blinds me and cripples my powers.  As for the weapon, well I wish I knew,” Shrugs. “It’s driving me insane. Only time can tell what and who I am, my mentors, my Guide, The keepers and The Council have no idea. Enoch does, but I guess that secret died with him? I can only say what I feel – it is powerful, it is dangerous and I am afraid it might either destroy, or save us. I have a long, difficult road to travel before the purpose of this weapon is known to us. As time goes by, as more of me evolves so does this dark power within me. I use to be terrified, but now I would not wish it upon anyone else. I will get through this dark to find my light. I hope I do not lose too much before I finally find it” Gives a dry, shy smile, meeting the interviewer’s eyes.

Troy, you are kind of a mysterious guy.  Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Gives a wicked smile. “I’d like to keep it that way.” Leans back in chair casually, while keeping his devilish smile.

Troy, I know you are bound by a secret oath that you keep from Ava, but can you tell us a little bit about that?  We promise not to tell Ava.
Chuckles. “Well by now Ava knows what it is, but the extent of this oath?” Raises eyebrow. “Let’s just say I am not good with boundaries.”

Ava, how do you feel about Troy?  We all know he is so HOT (sighs).  How do you deal with all the female attention he seems to get?
“Troy is my savior. I exist this way because of him, he gave me something no one else could – me” Smiles.
“As for the female attention – it’s crushing at first, but I’ve learned to deal with it. I know now what his truth is, who he really is, and other girls?” Grins. “A mere distraction, a front he puts up to protect the softy inside.”

Troy, you seem to have a lot of girls falling all over you.  Can you tell us how you feel about Ava?  Is she “the one” for you?
Huge grin. “What can I say I have that effect on women, and like every male ego it needs to be stroked from time to time.” Shrugs. “I’m over it now – in war there is no time for silly little games.”
Sits forward in his seat, folding his hands over his knees, giving an almost shy smile. “Ava is, and always has been the storm I chase. I will never get enough of her, as much as she has to learn from me, there is so much more I can learn from her. She is all kinds of crazy. I guess we are similar in that way.”

Ava, you made some choices that you really regretted.  Have you come to terms with them?  How have those choices shaped the way you will do things in the future?
“I will never come to terms with what I had done, or how I had gone about doing  things. I made the wrong choices, only I am to blame for this.  I am reckless and much is at stake in times like these. I need to control my emotions if I am to keep the mind-shift at bay. It is something I will fight with for the rest of my existence. How does this affect my actions?” It has altered me completely. Now I struggle with overthinking things completely. I need to be very sure of the consequences. I am but an amateur in this game, and very thankful for those I have around me to guide me, even if I never listen anyway.” Smiles “I will.”

Troy, what is the history behind you and Enoch?  How did you feel about Ava’s relationship with him?
Eyes darken at the mention of his name. “Enoch has always been a hot head, a show off, an imposter. I tried to give him chances, many chances to prove himself to us. But he always kept himself hidden from us, secretive and manipulating even from a young age.” Snorts. “I guess he got what came to him.” Crosses arms across sculptured chest. “We could have been brothers you know, but ever since that day he tried to steal something of mine, I knew, “shakes head.” I knew. “But Dad wouldn’t listen, and I don’t blame him, he loves everyone – it’s his way.”

Troy, what did you think about Ava, the first time you saw her, you know when you were eating her grapes?
Wicked arrogant smile. “That is not the first time I saw her, that was the first time I confronted her.” Shakes head. “Gosh she’s fun to tease.”

Troy, you were referred to as the Ignited One by the evil witch doctor king.  Can you tell us what that means?
“I’m afraid I have no idea at this point what it means.” Frowns.  If you find out, be sure to let me know, its driving us crazy. I have a suspicion, because I feel something growing inside of me… I’ve already said too much.”

Ava, does Troy know what happened between you and Enoch, while you were held captive?
Takes a deep sigh, buries face in hands.  “I’m afraid so.” Shakes head. “And I’m afraid it is something he will never forgive me for. He might say he has, but I can see it in his eyes, in the way he acts when someone speaks of him, I’ve only deepened the hatred there.”

Ava, I am dying to know, at the end of the book you and Troy are hidden, you drop down on the ground after seeing the person you and Troy were stalking, saying “This is bad, this is very bad.”  Can you give us a hint who that is?  I’m almost afraid to ask.
Swears. “We never saw that coming. Just when you think you know someone, when you think your finally gotten rid of the one thing that can destroy you.” Snorts. “Let’s just say my bad choices have come back to haunt me, or destroy me, which ever way – it’s bad.”

What can we look forward to Evanescent?
Ava: “There is nothing to look forward to in Evanescent, I lost everything.”

Random questions:

Favorite pastime:

Troy:  Riding my bike with my favorite girl.
Ava: Besides Troy – swimming.

 Favorite song:

Troy: Bush - glycerine
Ava: I love too many songs. Favorite bands – Lykke Li , Sia, Florence and the Machine, Prime Circle, 30Seconds to Mars.

Favorite food:

Troy: Meat
Ava: Seafood.

If you could choose a day to do anything you wanted, what would it be and who would you share it with?

Troy: I’d go to a tropical island, and do absolutely nothing with Ava of course! Girl you want to get me in trouble here.
Ava:  I’d really like to go back to Earth the way it was before WW3, before pollution, and radiation poisoning, to see it as it in the time of the Ancients. There is only one person who would enjoy it as much as I – Troy.

Now here's the exclusive trailer for Evanescent - the second book in The Broken Series

My Review:  This story centers around Ava, a teenage girl who just happens to be the chosen one, destined to save, even though her kind has also been called cursed. Ava lives on a planet called Poseidon. After the earth was destroyed, humans migrated here because it was much like Earth. They live here with the other inhabitants of the planet and are referred to as “The Broken.” Ava is the third generation of “The Broken,” a race of genetically enhanced human beings. Only two are known to have survived from the first generation. Most of the females from the second generation have died giving birth, and many of the second generation males have gone mad during “the change,” which occurs around puberty. With most of the first and second generations gone, that only leaves the third generation, “The Broken.” A chosen few of these will undergo the change at puberty, some go mad, others experience specially enhanced powers, and Ava, well Ava is destined, she is “The Chosen,” because within her lies the power to change the destiny of the planet, and her generation.

Ava and her best friend Sam attend the academy for the humans. Ava has always been different, she is a beautiful girl, but has always felt like she didn’t fit it. Sam has been there for her, comforting her when the nightmares come, looking out for her. They are governed by the Council, a group comprised of the different races, besides the humans, including the Minoans and the Zulu people.

One night after not being able to sleep Ava goes downstairs and encounters a strange male with a smooth voice, who she should be frightened of, but at the same time feels drawn to. She is still thinking about him the next day. The next afternoon after their game, the girls are walking with with their other Maya, who lives in the Minoan village, when a guy on a motorcycle catches Ava’s attention. There is something strangely familiar about him. She and Maya are going to the Minoan village to Maya’s house. On the way there, while crossing a bridge they are attacked by dark evil beings. Though they try to fight, Ava ends up going over the edge into the water, only to be saved by Enoch, Maya’s hot brother. Ava is also drawn to him, yet doesn’t feel as if she can trust him. This was the first attack, the beginning of the destiny that Ava had been chosen for. There is no stopping what is going to happen from this point on. It has begun. The question is, can she and those she loves survive until the end?

I really loved this story. It is a combination of dystopian, fantasy, science fiction, and paranormal romance. There is so much that goes on, it can’t possibly be contained in a review, but know that it is really good. I loved the characters. Ava is the heroine. She’s not perfect and she knows it, and she makes some bad choices, which she really beats herself up about, but she manages to pull herself out of the pit of despair and condemnation, with a little help from Troy. Ah, Troy, what can I say. He is the super hot bad boy that every girl dreams of. He and Ava have chemistry that sizzles, though they have a hard time managing to get together. So many obstacles are in their way. He may get frustrated with her, but he is always there when she needs him. Then there is Enoch. Enoch is really hot to, but he has a dark side. He is Maya’s adopted brother, but everyone warns Ava that he is bad news and to stay away from him. She doesn’t. Things seem good, then things turn bad, really bad. In the midst of all this romance, there is an evil being that is trying to abduct Ava for his own purpose to rise to into power and take over the planet. Ava and those protecting her constantly have to battle all kinds of voodoo, magic, and evil entities. Ava is also trying to learn how to access and use her powers, and keep those she loves alive.

There are so many more other great characters that you get to know in the book. All were entertaining and well written. The plot was creative, imaginative, and unique. Carlyle Labuschagne creates a fantasy world in “The Broken Destiny” that is filled with intrigue, beauty, and mystery. I found myself turning the pages, anxious to see what would happen next. Not only do you have plenty of romance and mystery, but there's also murder, battles with people and evil beings, and action galore. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you are looking for something different, love YA fantasy, paranormal romance, and science fiction, combined with a dystopian feel, then The Broken Destiny is one book you will want to check out. Carlyle Lasbuschagne has done an outstanding job with this debut novel, the first in the series, and I am looking forward to seeing where she takes the story from here.
