Whispers in Autumn (The Last Year #1)
by Trisha Leigh
Published July 24, 2012
In 2015, a race of alien Others conquered Earth. They enslaved humanity not by force, but through an aggressive mind control that turned people into contented, unquestioning robots.
Except sixteen-year-old Althea isn’t content at all, and she doesn’t need the mysterious note inside her locket to tell her she’s Something Else. It also warns her to trust no one, so she hides the pieces that make her different, even though it means being alone.
Then she meets Lucas, everything changes.
Althea and Lucas are immune to the alien mind control, and together they search for the reason why. What they uncover is a stunning truth the Others never anticipated, one with the potential to free the brainwashed human race.
It’s not who they are that makes them special, but what.
And what they are is a threat. One the Others are determined to eliminate for good.
My Thoughts: Sixteen year old Althea has always known she was different. She keeps to herself and trusts no one, focusing on blending in and not being noticed as she travels between seasons and time in this dystopian world. Aliens now rule, and they do it by mind control, only Althea has never been influenced by it. She doesn't understand why she's different. She doesn't know how long she will be alone. She only has a note carried in a treasured locket with a promise and instructions to hold onto. Things are different this autumn. She meets Lucas, and he's not like the other people. He sees her, really sees her. As they become friends, although she is very guarded, they face finding out what they are together, and come to really care for each other in the process. The revelation of who and what they are is not only unique to them, however. Unfortunately, the Others are hunting them also. Can they survive, and if they do will they lose each other in the process?
This was an interesting book that combined dystopia, science fiction, and fantasy, with some romance added in. Trisha Leigh has created a world in which its inhabitants live very controlled lives. Everything is dictated to them, how to dress, where to go, their entire lives mapped out according to the plans of the Others who control them. They live in fenced in cities, supposedly for their protection, but the veil over their minds keeps them from seeing the truth, everyone that is except Althea and Lucas. I liked Althea's character. She was very timid in the beginning, but proved herself to be quite a strong character as the book progressed. She wasn't afraid to stand up for those she cared about. I really loved Lucas. He has a great personality, is fun, loyal, and pretty hot. The relationship and ensuing romance between Lucas and Althea was sweet. I enjoyed the way Trisha Leigh used the elements in her story and tied them to the seasons, then meshed it so well together with the alien theme. I found the story line to be creative and thought provoking. If you are a dystopian, science fiction, and/or fantasy fan, then this is a book you should check out.
Winter Omens (The Last Year #2)
by Trisha Leigh
Expected Publication Date: September 25, 2012
Althea and Lucas barely escaped the Others’ clutches in the autumn, and were separated in the process. Alone and on the run from the cruel alien race determined to exterminate her, Althea struggles to adapt and survive in a world she never imagined.
When a boy named Pax appears out of nowhere, he quickly recognizes Althea for what she is – a human/Other hybrid just like him. Althea begs him to help her find Lucas, but Pax refuses, intent on following his own mysterious agenda.
The Others’ presence continues to devour the planet’s resources, and if history is an indication, they won’t leave until Earth is destroyed beyond repair. Althea and Pax sense the only way to save themselves – and maybe their home – is to understand the powers simmering inside them.
Together they push the limits of their capabilities in the quiet Wilds, but are soon confronted with a terrifying fact: no place is safe from the relentless pursuit of the Others.
Least of all their own minds.
My Thoughts: Winter Omens picks up where the first book in the series, Whispers in Autumn leaves off. Althea finds herself alone again after she and Lucas are separated when they are forced to travel to avoid being taken prisoner by the Others. The loneliness seems worse than in the beginning for Althea, threatening to consume her, because she doesn't know how to find Lucas. Knowing she cannot stay in the city, she makes her way to the wilds again, just trying to survive the harsh winter and figure out what to do next and how to find this boy she is coming to love. She finds help in the form of a wolf/dog who becomes in her best friend. When a boy suddenly appears, she notices he seems like her. The boy, Pax, immediately recognizes Althea as being different and wastes no time calling her out on it and revealing what he is. He is a loner, and doesn't plan on sticking around, yet Althea finds herself drawn to him. He is completely different that Lucas and the chemistry between the two is very strong, which makes things difficult for Althea because finds herself caring deeply for both of these boys. The Others are still in hot pursuit of Althea, Pax, and Lucas. As the mind control and the intrusions of the Others heightens, Pax and Althea find themselves in several intense situations.......sometimes the intense situations are just because they find themselves together. The situation worsens, capture is imminent, torture, betrayal, and heartache bombard them, and the strongest emotion of all, love, will have to save them all.
This was a great second book in this series. There was quite a bit more action in this book as Pax and Althea were constantly in danger and being pursued. We also meet some new characters in this book. I enjoyed getting to know Pax in this book, though I did miss Lucas' presence in the majority of the book. Pax has the whole bad boy that every girl loves thing going on. The romance intensifies in this book and a love triangle of sorts is formed. I am interested to see what that develops into, and though I love Pax, I am still loyal to Lucas at this point. Althea really steps up and becomes quite a kick-butt heroine. We also get to see into the inner workings of the mind of the Others in this novel and just how cruel they can be. Loyalties are tested and emotions run high in this novel. The book crescendos on an intense note with these friends barely escaping with their lives. One of them may not make it. As these three dissidents, Althea, Lucas, and Pax, Summer, Winter, and Autumn try to survive, they must find and rescue the missing link, Deshi, who is Spring. I am anxious to see where the journey takes these three next, to find out if they all survive, and to see how their relationships progress. This was another intriguing installment in this series. If you are a fan of dystopia, science fiction, fantasy and romance, you will find all these elements combined in this series.
