Review: The Secret of Ella and Micha by Jessica Sorensen

The Secret of Ella and Micha

(The Secret #1)

Published October 4, 2012

Ella and Micha have been best friends since they were kids. But one tragic night shatters their friendship and their lives forever.

Ella used to be a rule-breaker with fiery attitude who wore her heart on her sleeve. But she left everything behind when she went to college and transformed into someone that follows the rules, keeps everything together, and hides all her problems. But now it's summer break and she has nowhere else to go but home.

Ella fears everything she worked so hard to bury might resurface, especially with Micha living right next door. If Micha tries to tempt the old her back, she knows that it will be hard to resist.

Micha is sexy, smart, confident, and can get under Ella’s skin like no one else can. He knows everything about her, including her darkest secrets. And he’s determined to bring his best friend, and the girl he loves back, no matter what it takes.

(New Adult Contemporary)
*Mature Content** Recommended for ages 17+ due to sexual situations and language.

My Thoughts:  I cannot tell you how much I loved this book.  I bought it a couple of weeks ago and when Nereyda said I HAVE to read it, I decided to push everything aside and go for it.  Needless to say, I read it in one sitting, unable to put it down.  The Secret of Ella and Micha has made it onto my all-time favorites lists.

Ella and Micha have grown up together.  They are neighbors, best friends, and both come from dysfunctional families.  Micha's dad left him and his mom when he was a small child.  Ella's dad is an alcoholic, and her mom suffered from mental illness, so she grew up taking care of the house, cooking, etc.  They both realized they loved the other in their teens, but neither told the other for fear of losing their friendship.  Micha knows Ella, almost better than she knows herself, and Ella knows Micha.  They both loved to party, drag race, and Ella loved nothing more than to work on cars with Micha and the guys growing up, second only to listening to him play and sing.  Everything changed the night Ella's mom committed suicide.  Everything.  Ella is overwhelmed with the guilt of not being there when it happened, the fear of turning out like her mom, and most of all, the feeling of not being in control.  All this culminated in the night that changed her life, and Micha's life forever....the night Micha finds her on the bridge.  Ella had taken some of her mom's medicine, wanting to try to understand how her mom felt.  Her mom always thought she could fly, and had to be talked down off that same bridge before.  Now here Ella stood, and it was Micha who found her and pulled her back into reality, into him.  He tells her he loves her and they finally share the most passionate kiss.  Then Ella disappears.  She leaves, not wanting anyone, especially Micha, to know where she is.  Unable to cope with her feelings and everything that has happened, she thinks if she changes and becomes who she "thinks" she should be, that the past and it hurts will go away.

It is now 8 months later.  Ella is standing in her dorm room with her roommate Lila, packing up, heading home for the summer, not sure how she is going to face the people, namely Micha, that she left behind.  Micha has spent the last 8 months relentlessly searching for Ella, determined to find the girl he loves.  Everything else in his life has been put on hold, racing, partying, even his music.  Needless to say when she shows back up at home, he is not about to let her get away again, and is determined to bring back the girl he loves, get past the wall she has created, and help her realize just how much she loves him to.....and she does.....no matter how hard she tries to deny it.

I loved everything about this story.  The plot, the pace, the romance, and most of all the characters.  Micha is one of those fictional guys that are just to die for.  He is super hot, has tattoos, sing and plays in a band,  and has a smile that melts hearts.  Everything about him just oozes with hottness.  I liked Ella a lot to.  She has had such a hard life and her fear has forced her to bottle everything up inside, trying to control it all, but there is a girl underneath this facade that is full of life and passion, just waiting to be brought out.  The chemistry between Micha and Ella.... lets just say you can feel the sparks flying off the page.  Micha is one sexy dude, and there are some scenes in the book that will curl your toes, in a good way.  I loved the fact that their relationship was built on a lifetime of friendship, a friendship that grew into a love that couldn't be denied.  Both of them have to work through some major hurtful issues in their lives as they journey to find each other again.  The secondary characters in the book were also so well done.  I felt like I got to know them all.  I am really anxious to read Ethan and Lila's story, which is the third book in this series.  Jessica Sorensen has done an outstanding job in creating these characters and their story, a story that you won't soon forget.  I am such a fan of the new adult books that are coming out, and The Secret of Ella and Micha makes it into my top ten list of favorites.  If you love contemporary romance, especially the new adult version, then this is one story you won't want to miss, and one you will definitely want to make time for.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Here are just a few of my favorite quotes:

He is my best friend, my soul mate. In a perfect world, full of roses and sunshine we’d be together, but this world is full of broken homes, drunken fathers, and mothers who give up easily.

"Just because it's broken, doesn't mean it loses its importance. And I figured I'd give it to you one day when you realized it was okay to make mistakes."

“I love you, Ella May and nothing will ever change that. You can push me away—run away—and I will still love you.”

“Micha saw too much of me and it scared me too much to let him in all the way.”

“The kiss … was an earthshattering kiss, one that stole breaths, stopped hearts, and scared the sh*t out of me because it surfaced feelings I’d never felt before, ones that rendered me helpless.”

“…when it all comes down to it, it’s just me and her against the world. Always has been.”

About the author:

I live in Wyoming with my husband and three kids. I’m the author of the Fallen Star Series, the Darkness Falls Series, the Death Collectors Series, and the New York Times and USA Today Best Seller, The Secret of Ella and Micha, a New Adult Contemporary novel.

I love writing and reading almost anything that is YA. Some of my favorite authors are Cassandra Clare, Sarah Dessen, Becca Fitzpatrick, Abbi Glines, Tammara Webber, Jamie McGuire and Jennifer L. Armentrout. I’m also an avid watcher of TV series The Vampire Diaries and of Modern Family.
I absolutely love music. When I’m writing, 9 out of 10 times I have music blaring in the background. My list of favorite songs could go on and on, since I have a very broad taste in music. But a few of my favorite bands are Chevelle, Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, Brand New, Death Cab for Cutie, Flight 409, Nirvana, and I’m going to stop there or else I’ll keep going on forever.

I don’t really have any favorite movies, but a few that I could watch over and over again are Anywhere but Here, Juno, Pride and Prejudice, The Hangover, and Bad Teacher.

  7. Wonderful review! You should check out Jessica's newest release that came out yesterday: The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden. It was just as good (if not better than) Ella & Micha. Both are so swoon-worthy.
