Battlefield
by J. F. Jenkins
Publisher:  Astraea Press
Publication Date:  March 15, 2012

Blurb:
Cadence, JD, and Orlando couldn’t be more different from one another. Under normal circumstances, the three wouldn’t so much as say hi to each other if they could get away with it. Then an alien crashes through the roof of their local mall, and everything changes. Not only do the three teens gain new abilities, but they’re also chosen to help fight in an intergalactic war where the next chosen battlefield is Earth.
Reluctant at first, they change their minds when the fight hits close to home. Teenagers from school start to go missing, and some are dead. Together they must learn to work together and solve the mystery behind these disappearances before more lives are lost.

My Thoughts: Three teens, best friends Cadence and JD, and the loner Orlando happen to be sitting in the mall one day when something comes crashing through the roof.  As they get closer they discover that it isn't a thing, but resembles a man, only he's not a man, but an alien.  The catch is, no one can see him but Candace, JD, and Orlando.  The alien, who they call Alan, proceeds to tell them that there is going to be a battle, and intergalactic battle, and this battle is going to take place on Earth.  Not only that, these three are chosen to help be part of a team and will develop "special abilities," to help them as they prepare for this battle.  A series of murders and missing teens leads Alan, and his team into an investigation to find out if this is the work of the enemy.  Meanwhile, Orlando has had to move to another school after getting kicked out of his high school for fighting, but it just so happens that this new school might be one of the center hubs for the enemy's activities.  As relationships and new friendships are formed, everyone is not always who or what they seem and the investigation begins to hit closer to home than they imagined.

This book was a little different that what I expected.  After seeing the cover and reading the blurb, I expected there to be a lot of alien activity, battles, and the like, but this centers more on the teens involved in the book, their lives, and them discovering their new abilities and learning how to use them.  Probably about half-way through you start to see a little more about the actual alien involvement, though the story deals more with preparing the teams for the battle than the actual battle itself.  The characters were cute and each had their own unique personality, and the interaction between them was quite humorous at times. Orlando is rather snarky and makes a lot of sarcastic comments.  JD is more the hero type person, and Cadence is the brains of the bunch.  We get to know Alan a little, but the alien factor, the battle and what is was actually about still remained somewhat vague, and I would have liked to have seen a little more clarity regarding that.  The action did pick up somewhat about three-quarters into the book, as they infiltrated the enemy's camp, but up until that point, it was a little slow-paced and more focused on the teens themselves.  The book ends in a bit of a cliff hanger, so there is obviously going to be more to the story.  Overall, Battlefield is probably something that would appeal more to tweens and younger teens, and I would recommend it to that agegroup.

Review: The Lost Code by Kevin Emmerson

The Lost Code (The Atlanteans #1)
by Kevin Emmerson
Publisher:  Harper Collins Children's Books
Publication Date:  May 22, 2012
Rating:  3.5/5 Stars

Amazon  *  Barnes and Noble

What is oldest will be new, what was lost shall be found.

The ozone is ravaged, ocean levels have risen, and the sun is a daily enemy.

But global climate change is not something new in the Earth's history.

No one will know this better than less-than-ordinary Owen Parker, who is about to discover that he is the descendant of a highly advanced ancient race--a race that took their technology too far and almost destroyed the Earth in the process.

Now it is Owen's turn to make right in his world what went wrong thousands of years ago. If Owen can unlock the lost code in his very genes, he may rediscover the forgotten knowledge of his ancestry . . . and that "less-than-ordinary" can evolve into "extraordinary."

Kevin Emerson's thrilling novel is Book One of the Atlanteans series--perilous adventures in a grimly plausible dystopian future, fueled by high-stakes action, budding romance, and a provoc-ative question: What would you do if you had the power to save humanity from its own self-destruction?

My Thoughts:  This dystopian story takes place in a world where it is no longer safe to be outdoors because of danger from the sun due to ozone damage.  Owen Parker finds himself the winner of a contest to participate in a summer camp in one of the exclusive domes that have been built for people to live in safely, which recreates the feel of the real world before the earth was damaged.  Owen is from the hub, an underground community for those not fortunate enough to live in the domed community of Eden.  He pretty much tries to keep to himself and stay inconspicuous.  Owen finds himself at the lake for swimming testing.  Normally, he wouldn't participate in this strenuous test, but he finds himself quite taken with the instructor, Lilly, who is one of the other girls at the camp.  Despite his better judgement he jumps in and does pretty well for a while.  The next thing he knows he has cramp, he's sinking to the bottom, and no one notices that he isn't there.  As he slowly begins to lose consciousness, he hears a strange voice begin to speak to him telling him that what is oldest will be new and what was lost shall be found.  That is the last thing Owen remembers before he drowns.

The next thing  he knows he wakes up to Lilly giving him CPR.  When Lilly whispers to him not to tell them (meaning the camp leaders) how long he was under the water, he was shocked to find that he had been under more than 10 minutes.  From this point on the world as Owen Parker knows it is forever changed.  Destined to unlock the code that will help save the world, Owen finds himself no longer a follower, but an emerging leader, under the close observation of the leaders of the camp, and in the beginning of a budding relationship with Lilly.  He discovers new friends that have undergone the same changes that he has experienced, and he finds that there are those who would do anything to stop him.  Owen must decide whether to give in or stand up for what he knows is right.  The future of humanity just might depend on it.

This dystopian story also incorporates some mythology, centered around the lost city of Atlantis, which was interesting and fresh.  I liked the main character Owen.  I am not sure how old he was, but he seemed to be one of the older campers.  Lilly, who I really liked, was a little older that Owen and had a great personality.  There are several other characters in the book who also play important roles, one being Leech, who was quite the bully.  The story line was interesting, though a little slow-paced in the beginning, but by the end of the book there was quite a bit of action, and the Atlantis mythology comes more into play.  The love interest was sweet also.  The Lost Code is a book that I think would appeal mainly to the middle grade age group and some older teens, and I would definitely recommend it to that age group.  It reminds me somewhat of Percy Jackson, though not as fast paced.  With that in mind, if you enjoy dystopian stories and mythology, then The Lost Code is something you or your children might enjoy.

Blog Tour: Racing To Love by Amy Gregory

Welcome to my stop on the Blog Tour for Racing To Love by Amy Gregory, sponsored by Reading Addiction Blog Tours.  In addition to a review, there is an excerpt and giveaway, which you can check out below.  You can visit the rest of the stops on the tour here.  Thanks for stopping by!

Racing to Love
by Amy Gregory
Date Published: 6/7/2012

Synopsis:

From the outside, Molly West had everything, beauty, brains, and a career she’d retired from not once, but twice.  Being in the limelight and in a sport that was male driven, she was often surrounded by men.  She ignored first the boys, and as she got older, the men.  Her cold shoulder and patented not a chance in hell look were usually enough to get her point across.  Molly had no plans in changing what was a perfectly good system. That is until she walked into the pits.

Carter Sterling had traveled the racing circuit since he was a boy.  He’d heard all the old standbys, She’s out there somewhere, love comes along when you least expect it.  Good things come to those that… Yeah, he’d heard them all.  The last place he expected to meet the love of his life was on a pro track.  All she did was smile, and he knew, looking into her sapphire blue eyes, Molly West was his.  Forever.  If it was only that easy.  From the moment he laid eyes on her, he had a gripping feeling in him.  An overwhelming need to protect her—a girl he’d just met.  Carter had learned a long time ago that gut feelings are almost never wrong.  Molly now held his heart in her hands, but it was going to take a lot more than just love to protect her from the past she thought she’d buried a long time ago.

My Thoughts:  Molly West is a female in her 20's who has excelled in a sport dominated by males.  She holds quite a few titles, and has come out of retirement for a 4-month contract as a motocross trick rider.  Escorted and coached by her brother Brody and his girlfriend Erin, she thinks this is just another gig, that is until she looks into the eyes of Carter Sterling, and suddenly her world turns upside down.  When Carter sees Molly, he knows there is something about her that is different, something that he desperately wants.  There is only one thing standing in his way, Molly's brother Brody Noland.  Brody has already warned all the guys at the track that Molly is off limits, but Carter's not about to let that stop him.  He knows that Brody is a little "exaggerated" in his need to protect Molly, but what he doesn't yet know is that Molly has a painful and horrid past, and that despite her outer beauty, her past has left her deeply scarred inside.  Sheltered for years by her family, Molly knows that there is something about Carter that she can trust, and in spite of her fears and reservations, she is ready to take a chance on love.  Despite the obstacles, Carter and Molly are determined to be together, but then danger comes back into her life and she and Carter have to face something a lot more threatening than Brody ever thought about being.

I really liked this book.  It is a really sweet love story, with the added element of drama and mystery.  Carter Sterling is perfect.  I want a Carter for myself.  He is super hot, dreamy, sexy, thoughtful, determined, caring and would do anything for Molly.  I liked Molly to, and I felt bad for her and all she had to go through in her life.   I enjoyed not only seeing the supportive family she had, but the way Carter loved her and was so patient with her.  Brody was kind of a jerk, but I understood where he was coming from, even though he carried it too far.  There are some really funny secondary characters that were all well written and fun to get to know.  Molly and Carter's relationship is one of those love at first sight types with sparks flying and chemistry through the roof from the first glance.  They have some emotional moments, and some very sexy and steamy ones also.  The book was fast paced and I read it in one sitting.  The racing theme was also fun and entertaining and that, combined with the suspense, drama, and some sexy romance, proved this book to be quite an enjoyable read.

Excerpt

They continued to walk back toward the pits, but he stopped when they were in the darkened hallway, just before they would have rounded the corner and been seen.
Molly’s heart sped.
He was still holding her hand, but turned to face her as he placed his other hand on her waist. She sucked in a breath when he stepped forward. Her first instinct was to be anxious, to cower back, but something in those ice blue eyes told her she didn’t have to be afraid.
When he had leaned in to kiss her when they were sitting on the track, she’d panicked. And then when he had started to move away, she’d panicked again—for a different reason entirely.
Those flip-flopping emotions were about to drive her crazy.
Now, in the dimmed corridor, Molly closed her eyes to catch her breath and to search for a decision. He’d been rubbing his thumb on her waist, but his movements stopped when her eyes dropped closed. The soothing strokes didn’t continue until she finally reopened her eyes and dragged her attention up his chest and past his Adam’s apple. She continued up until she locked her gaze with his. When she offered him a hesitant smile, he began stroking her again with a warm smile on his lips.
Staring down at her, he let go of her hand and skimmed the back of his over her cheek. She felt her heart thundering, her pulse racing when she ran her hands up his chest, feeling each and every rippled muscle. She’d never purposely touched a man like this before. Sure, she’d felt Brody’s muscles when she’d smacked him for one reason or another. Or when trying to push him off of her after he’d wrestled her to the ground being an ornery brother and all. But this? This was foreign.
Her eyes were back on her own fingers, taking everything in. She stopped at his heart and could feel it pounding hard beneath the soft cotton t-shirt.
“Just so you know…” he started in his slow, sexy voice.
She could tell he was waiting for eye contact again before continuing. “Yeah?” she whispered.
“I’m going to fall in love with you.”

Blog Tour: Moonlight Mayhem #MMBlogTour - Character Interview

Hi and welcome to my stop on the Book Tour for Moonlight Mayhem by Sherry Soule.  Today's feature is a character interview with Shiloh.  Hope you enjoy!

Hi everyone, I’m Sherry Soule—waving from Castro Valley, California, where it gets pretty foggy even in the summer. And even with the fog burning off by afternoon, I’m chilling on my laptop and chatting on Twitter about my favorite books and movies.
Thank you for letting me hang out today as part of my epic Moonlight Mayhem Blog Tour this summer. It’s a thrill to get to be a guest and meet all these awesome booklovers.
My tour has been so much fun and it is nice seeing the familiar names in the comment section of each guest post. For those of you who haven’t heard about my Moonlight Mayhem blog tour it’s not too late to join the fun!
To celebrate the release of author, Sherry Soule’s new paranormal, romance novel, MOONLIGHT MAYHEM, we thought it might be entertaining if she did an interview with one of the the main characters from her recent release, MOONLIGHT MAYHEM. Sherry has decided to interview the heroine, Shiloh Ravenwolf.
If a snarky, kickass, and vibrant type of heroine, who can rival the darkest of evils, aided by her quirky fashion sense, appeals to your inner bad girl, then you'll love Shiloh. She's a unique teen witch.
If you’ve already read the novels, this interview should be amusing and insightful. If you haven’t read the series yet, hopefully the character interview will pique your interest.

The boots are my security blanket. They remind me who I am: Shiloh Ravenwolf. Badass Witch. And if I was gonna kick ass and take names, I needed my boots.

Blog Tour: Dante's Girl by Courtney Cole

Hi, welcome to my stop on the Dante's Girl Blog Tour sponsored by Kismet Book Touring.  Dante's Girl is written by Courtney Cole, and is now available at Amazon and Barnes and Noble (see links below).

Dante's Girl
by Courtney Cole
Publisher:  Lakehouse Press
Publication Date:  June 22, 2012

Synopsis:

I have spent every summer since I was ten years old with my father in London.  Every summer, since I was ten years old, has been uneventful and boring.
Until this year.
And this year, after a freak volcanic eruption strands me far from home, I have learned these things:
1.  I can make do with one outfit for three days before I buy new clothes.
2.  If I hear the phrase, “You’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto,” even one more time, I might become a homicidal maniac.
3.  I am horribly and embarrassingly allergic to jellyfish.
4. I am in love with Dante Giliberti, who just happens to be the beautiful, sophisticated son of the Prime Minister of a Mediterranean paradise.
5.  See number four above.  Because it brings with it a whole slew  of problems and I’ve learned something from every one of them.
Let’s start with the fact that Dante’s world is five light-years away from mine.  He goes to black-tie functions and knows the Prime Minister of England on a first name basis.  I was born and raised on a farm in Kansas and wear cut-off jeans paired with cowboy boots.  See the difference?
But hearts don’t care about differences.  Hearts want what they want.  And mine just wants to be Dante’s girl.
My heart just might be crazy.

My Thoughts:  I absolutely adored this book.  It has been one of the most fun and entertaining books I have read this summer.  Reece is 17 years old, is flying to London to spend the summer with her father, and ends up running into the most beautiful boy she has ever seen, literally.  His name is Dante Giliberti, and Reece dubs him as the equivalent of the Greek God Apollo.  They end up on the same flight.  Dante is in first class and Reece is in coach, then Dante ends up sitting beside her.  Before they even take off there is an explosion, a fire, Dante's security guards are whisking him off the plane, and he tells Reece he is taking her with him.  That is how Reece, a country girl from the heart of Kansas, ends up on the beautiful Greek Island of Caberra, with the son of the Prime Minister, who not only is gorgeous, but is also a billionaire.  With nothing more than an overnight bag and one outfit Reece finds herself in a palace that seems more like a museum, with this Greek God of a guy, who also happens to be one of the nicest people she has ever met.  One thing leads to another and Reece is invited to spend the whole summer on the Island as the guest of the Giliberti's and intern at their olive business.  She and Dante both find that this is a summer that will change their lives forever.  Reece finds out that the term "it's complicated," takes on a whole new meaning.  The question is, can love overcome these complications?

I really loved Reece.  She is absolutely hilarious.  The things she says are funny, but the inner dialogue she has going on with herself will leave you holding your side in laughter.  She is sweet, she is really pretty, even though she doesn't see it, and she is real.  Dante is super hot, he's nice, and he's not caught up in the prestige of who he is.  His only fault is that he tries so hard to do everything that is "expected" of him in order to please his father.  The chemistry between Dante and Reece is undeniable, and despite threats from the evil Elena, who thinks she has a claim on Dante, they can't stay away from each other.  Dante is quite the gentleman and never pushes Reece in anyway, but must decide if he is going to be true to his heart, or true to what's expected of him.  I loved the story line.  Dante's Girl has the feel of a modern day young adult fairy tale with conspiracy, espionage, romance, with a whole lot of humor and love in the mix.  This is a enchanting contemporary romance and the perfect summer read.  Enjoy it?  Yes, I most certainly did.

The residents of Blackbrooke share their town with the Creatures, or Crits as they are known. Grotesque, roaming the streets at night looking for food, their presence means humans have to live by the Rules, keeping them indoors and forbidding them of basic desires.

The most important Rule?

Don’t be a ‘walk out’!

Straight-A student, Liberty Connor, hates the Crits and the endless Rules she and her tight knit group of friends have to live by.

Planning her new life on the Outside with her boyfriend, Gabriel, Liberty whiles away her days waiting to turn 18, so they can leave and be free. That is, until the world she thinks she knows begins to unravel…

Her friends start to walk out. So she’s told. However, something’s not right. Things don’t add up.

Liberty faces a race against time to discover what’s going on with the Creatures of Blackbrooke.

Is it them she has to fear, or something much closer to home?
