Apollyon by Jennifer Armentrout - Review, Giveaway, Character Meet and Greet with Quotefest

Apollyon (Covenant #4)

Fate isn’t something to mess with… and now, neither is Alex.

Alex has always feared two things: losing herself in the Awakening and being placed on the Elixir. But love has always been stronger than Fate, and Aiden St. Delphi is willing to make war on the gods—and Alex herself—to bring her back.

The gods have killed thousands and could destroy entire cities in their quest to stop Seth from taking Alex’s power and becoming the all-powerful God Killer. But breaking Alex’s connection to Seth isn’t the only problem. There are a few pesky little loopholes in the whole “an Apollyon can’t be killed” theory, and the only person who might know how to stop the destruction has been dead for centuries.

Finding their way past the barriers that guard the Underworld, searching for one soul among countless millions, and then somehow returning will be hard enough. Alex might be able to keep Seth from becoming the God Killer… or she might become the God Killer herself.

My Thoughts:  I loved, loved, loved this book.  All of the installments in the series have been awesome, but this has been my favorite, along with Half-Blood.  I am a huge fan of Jennifer Armentrout's and I love all of her books.  Alex, however,  is my favorite female main character, not just from this series, but she is on the top of my list from all the books I've read.  She is snarky, loyal, loves fiercely, is absolutely hilarious at times, can be a little arrogant, is sometimes cocky, and is a total badass.  I just love her.  As far as the male main characters/love interests go, in the beginning, I liked Aiden, I mean he is a total hottie and absolutely swoon-worthy  but he didn't quite do it for me, not like Daemon from the Lux series anyway.  What I did like, and have always liked, is the chemistry between Aiden and Alex, which has always been off the charts hot, and get ready girls, cause it gets even hotter in Apollyon.  In Pure, I switched to team Seth.  He's a bad boy, and I have a weakness for them.  He also seemed like a pretty good guy in Pure.  In Deity, I fell in love with Aiden.  He absolutely won my heart and I will never leave nor forsake him again.  I am team Aiden forever. Till death do us part and all that jazz.  In Elixir, you get to see another side of Aiden and I loved getting inside his head.

In Apollyon, everything gets more intense and even hotter in every sense of the word.  If you haven't read Elixir, I would definitely do that before starting Apollyon.  There are kick-ass battles with people, mythical beasts, and gods.  There are hot and steamy love scenes, some really scary moments, some really sad moments, and some absolutely hilarious ones.  The secondary characters in this story are so much fun and are such an integral part of the story.  Jennifer Armentrout has done an outstanding job in writing them and I have become so attached to some of them also, especially Deacon.  It's hard to write too much about what goes on without spoiling the series for someone, but trust me when I say, this is one series that you won't want to miss.   I was captivated from beginning to end, laughing, wanting to ninja kick something, fanning my face, and then wanting to cry.  Jennifer Armentrout has outdone herself yet once again with Apollyon.  It is an absolutely amazing book from a truly gifted and talented author who has quickly shown the literary community just what she is made of.  In fact, I think that there may be a little Alex living inside of Jennifer Armentrout as well.  I bet she's even got some badass ninja moves herself.  Seriously, if you haven't checked out this series, make the time to do so.  You won't be disappointed.

Okay, I've been waiting to post my review until the release, so when I found out that the Kindle and Nook versions have been released, I just couldn't wait any longer to share this with you guys.  Yes, it is kind of a visual smorgasbord and quotefest from Apollyon.  I've try to pick out some quotes that I don't think are spoilers, but yet help you get to know the characters a little better, of course that is just my opinion.  I also picked out some pictures of what I envision the characters to look like.  I hope you enjoy!

Oh, and I am also giving away a copy of Apollyon to one lucky winner, so be sure and enter that giveaway below.  It is international.

Character Meet and Greet with Quotefest

Alex

Before I could raise a hand, he spun around like the wind, letting go of the dagger.  It smacked into the chest of the white-garbed guard sneaking up on him.  Damn.  Aiden was a badass ninja.

He released the blades and I caught them.  Waving them in his face, I grinned.  “I kind of rock at this.”  He turned, brows furrowed.  “I don’t even know what that move was.”  I flipped the dagger in my right hand.  “It’s called being awesome, and it worked.”

I rolled my eyes, but shoved my hands under the warm water…..I  watched my hands disappear under his larger ones and sort of forgot about what I was asking.  Who knew washing hands could be so…..distracting?

Hope flickered in my chest.  “Do you think they’ll stop this….zombie-apocalypse-in-the-making if they realize I’m back on Team Not-Insane?

Once inside the room, I tossed him a coy look over my shoulder.  At least, I thought it was coy, but it probably looked like I had something in my eye.

I took a deep, long breath.  “You…..you should join me.”  Part of me expected that I would have to do a decent amount of begging.  Aiden was “on the job,” and I was prepared to deploy every technique I knew, including whining.

Apollo dropped the necklace in my palm…..”Ha,” I said.  “It’s like Harry Potter and the invisibility cloak.”

Being that this was the first time using akasha like a flyswatter, I wasn’t prepared for the exhaustion that followed.  I reached for my daggers and realized, like a total tool, I’d thrown them somewhere over yonder in a fit of “I am so awesome” and “who needs daggers when I have akasha fingers of power” ego trip.

I placed my hands on his upper arms.  His muscles coiled under them as he lifted me up and I wrapped my legs around him. Desire wasn’t the only thing between us.  There was so much more:  forgiveness, acceptance, relief, and most importantly, love.

I squared my shoulders.  “Release the Kraken!”  Several sets of eyes settled on me.  “What?”  I gave a lopsided shrug.  “I’ve always wanted to yell that since I saw that movie.  Seemed like the perfect moment.”

Aiden:

“Man up?”  He sat back in a lazy arrogant sprawl, but the coiled tension was in every muscle in his body.  “It’s a good thing I love you or I’d find that particularly insulting.”

“By the way,” Aiden said, casting me a long look that had me totally forgetting about the seriousness of our mission.  “You look damn good in a Sentinel uniform.”  A hot flush that had nothing to do with embarrassment spread over me.  “So do you.”
“I know.”  I laughed outright.  “Wow.  Healthy ego there.”

“Gods Alex, you don’t just stick your finger into things.”  I arched a brow.  He rolled his eyes.  “Your mind scares me.”  I grinned.  “You like how my mind works.”  Instant heat darkened his silver eyes.  “Most of the time, yes.”

My eyes went wide.  “Wow, are you trying to get me naked?”  His silvery gaze met mine.  “Do you really need me to answer that?”

“That’s not what this is.”  I stared at Apollo, but damn, that glove fascinated him.  “If there’s going to be a god gunning for my butt--”  “It is a nice butt,”  Aiden murmured as he studied the toes of his boots.  A small grin was on his face.

Deacon:

All of us sat at the kitchen table and dug in.  Someone thanked Laadan for the meal and Deacon about had a coronary.  “Who tenderized the meat?  Who marinated and watched it dutifully?  His blond brows lowered as he held his fork like Luke held a dagger.  “That would be me.” …….Aiden dropped into the seat beside his brother……”Deacon is one hell of a cook.”…..Not even trying to hide his proud smile, Deacon glanced at Luke.  “I’m full of surprises.”

“What are you doing?”  Aiden demanded.  Deacon looked up from under the mop of curls.  “I’m becoming a fire bug.”
".....Even me,”  Deacon said, “I haven’t gotten my regular twelve hours of sleep since all of this went down, and that is damn tragic.”

There was a knock, and we drew apart an instant before the door swung open and Deacon’s mop of a head popped in…… "Good morning!”  Too much cheer rang in his voice for this time of the morning.  My cheeks burned as I mumbled, “Morning.”  Before either of us could say another word, Deacon darted from the door and launched himself onto the bed, soaring through the air like a human projectile.  I jerked to the side with a split-second to spare.  He landed with his legs on his brother and the upper part of his body between us.  Deacon threw his arms behind his head, folding them as he tipped his head back and grinned at us.  “It’s like a puppy pile.”

“You’re so unnaturally wound up.”  “I’m excited,” he replied.  “I’m looking at this road trip like a real life game of Oregon Trail.”

Deacon nodded at the bathroom door and my gaze followed his.  I couldn’t see Aiden and I knew he couldn’t hear us, but my heart was pounding like I’d just run up a thousand steps.  “He wouldn’t get past losing you”………..He’s so strong, but…..”  “It would kill him.  I know.  Losing you would kill him.” ………There was a pause, and he looked at me with all the seriousness no one ever gave him credit for, and in that moment he reminded me so much of Aiden.  “Whatever you do, don’t break my brother’s heart.  You are his world.  And if you leave it, it will destroy him.”

Seth

Seth.  Oh gods, I was staring at Seth.  He was here.  Impossible, but he was here with me……Seth’s lips curved into a satisfied smile and he placed his mouth near my ear.  “I told you, Alex.  I’d find you anywhere.”
He arches a mocking brow.  “What?  Are you struck speechless?  That would be a first.”

“I missed you.  So relax.”  Relax?  I was supposed to relax when I was here, wherever here was, with crazy-pants Seth?  My head jerked toward him.  Our faces were mere inches apart. “You missed me?”   “I miss the Alex who lived to make me happy."  He laughed at what I was sure was an, I’m going to murder you look that crossed my face.

Marcus

“Alexandria?”  I turned at the sound of my uncle’s voice and headed toward where he stood just off the porch “Hey.”  He tried to smile but it was forced.  “I know you’ll be careful, but really—be careful.  Okay?”  “I’m always careful.”’ Marcus’ expression turned bland.  Unable to help myself, I grinned.  “I’ll be careful.  I promise.”  At the sound of Aiden’s approaching footsteps, he stepped back and pinned the other pure with a dark look.  “If anything happens to her, it’s your ass.”  My mouth dropped.  “Did you just cuss?  I’ve never heart you cuss before.  Wow.”

Luke

Luke dropped an arm over my shoulders.  “You hanging in there?”  “Of course.”  His brows rose.“You’ve been running like the little Apollyon Energizer Bunny.”

Luke dropped his chopsticks into his noodles.  There was a nasty bruise on the side of his face, disappearing into his hairline.  “Did I do that?”  I stepped into the kitchen.  “The bruise?” “Yeah,” he said slowly.  When you slammed me into the wall without touching me.”  I winced.  “I’m really sorry about that.”  “Aw, don’t worry about it.”  Deacon smiled as he leaned back into his chair , rocking it up on two legs.  “He’s okay.”  “My ego’s not.”  He shot Aiden’s brother a dirty look.  “She didn’t even touch me.”  Deacon shrugged.  “Well, she is the Apollyon, Duh.”

Laadan
Laadan laughed then, the sound like wind chimes.  “He watched you like a man starved for the only thing that could fulfill his hunger.”

Olivia
“You totally deserved that.”  Olivia’s voice shook.  “Do you know how
terrible I felt when Marcus came down and found me sitting there like a turd? …”

Lea
Lea cocked her head to the side as she frowned at the gore dripping from the blade.  “Well, that was gross.”……. Lea reached down and wiggled her fingers.  “You gonna sit there the rest of the night or get up?  Because I’m sure as hell not carrying your ass.  You probably weigh a ton.”

Solos

As the car drove past, I turned to find Solos gaping at me.  “What?”  I demanded.  “Did you just Jedi-mind trick him?”  A small grin pulled at my lips.  “I’ve always wanted to say that.”  “Dear gods,” he mumbled turning back.

Solos exhaled loudly.  “How long are you going to stare at your hands?  I’m not getting any younger over here.”

Caleb

“Oh, Alex, even I’m amazed by how inflated your ego has become.  Gods, if I was fully corporeal, I’d so kick your ass right now.”

“Well, that was depressing.”  Caleb ran a hand through his hair.  “If I wasn’t dead already, I’d feel a tad bit suicidal.”

Apollo

“Well, it’s good to see the Scooby gang all in one piece.  Warms my heart and all that jazz, but let’s get to the point.”

“You two should really get a room,” Apollo said from out of nowhere.  “My poor eyes….”  I groaned.  Even in his true identity, he still had impeccable timing.  “Gods…..do you get off on sneaking up on us?”  “You probably don’t want to know what I get off on.”  I made a face.  “Ew.”

“I ended up banned from Olympus for a year.” Apollo continued blithely, “but in the end, Zeus resurrected my son to insure there would be no further feuds with me.”  He paused.  “You’re wondering what the moral of this story is?  I always find a way to take care of my own.”

  8. I loved that you wanted to ninja kick something!! LOL. I am waiting patiently for my book to be delivered!!! I thought about buying it for my kindle so I don't have to wait but I just finished Elixir. I have to admit that Elixir has been my fave so far. Although, each book keeps getting better. I am glad I kept reading after Half-Blood.

I love the picture of Alex. I think of her the same. For me in my little old head, the picture you have for Solos is MY Aiden. That is exactly how I picture him.
