Runes
by Ednah Walters
Publication date:  May 20th 2013
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Synopsis:  Seventeen-year-old Raine Cooper has enough on her plate dealing with her father’s disappearance, her mother’s erratic behavior and the possibility of her boyfriend relocating. The last thing she needs is Torin St. James—a mysterious new neighbor with a wicked smile and uncanny way of reading her.

Raine is drawn to Torin’s dark sexiness against her better judgment, until he saves her life with weird marks and she realizes he is different. But by healing her, Torin changes something inside Raine. Now she can’t stop thinking about him. Half the time, she’s not sure whether to fall into his arms or run.

Scared, she sets out to find out what Torin is. But the closer she gets to the truth the more she uncovers something sinister about Torin. What Torin is goes back to an ancient mythology and Raine is somehow part of it. Not only is she and her friends in danger, she must choose a side, but the wrong choice will cost Raine her life.
My Thoughts:  When I began reading Runes I really didn't have any expectations, other than knowing what runes were and that this was a paranormal romance.  I have read Ednah Walters "The Guardians" series and I loved it, so I knew what a great author she was, a fact that was further demonstrated in Runes.  I loved it.  In fact, I have been in kind of slump with paranormal romances, choosing more contemporary, so this was a pleasant surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed.

In Runes, Ednah Walters incorporates Norse mythology into a modern day setting, creating a world that is exciting, intriguing, and mysterious.  I was as anxious to know what Torin was as Raine was, which made the story that much more interesting and kept me turning the pages to find out what happened next.  I really liked Raine's character.  She grows into quite the heroine, and the stage has been set to really challenge her in this area in the next book in the series.  Torin is an immortal badass and a total hottie that makes you swoon, sigh, and fan your face all at the same time.  The chemistry between Torin and Raine is sizzling hot, and get this, he rides a Harley.  She is in a relationship with Eirik, but he's also her best friend and she doesn't want to lose him, which complicates things even further, especially with Torin.  Cora is Raine's fun, outgoing, outspoken, and charismatic other best friend and I totally loved her character.

Things got really intense toward the end as it became more clear about who and what Torin is, where he comes from, and even things about Raine herself and her family that she had no clue about.  There were some twists and turns that I did not see coming, especially the ending.  OMG, I totally didn't see that one and yes, it is a cliffhanger that will leave you desperate to read what happens next.  Granted it is a really well done cliffhanger, but a cliffhanger nonetheless.  As for the paranormal aspect, Ednah Walters did a great job of weaving Norse mythology into the story, which was really interesting.  Overall, this is an excellently written YA paranormal romance that I thoroughly enjoyed and would most definitely recommend.  I cannot wait to read book two, Immortals, which is coming out in July.

TEASER:

“I wanted us to be alone.”

I released a shaky breath. “I saw you earlier.”

“It wasn’t enough. Call me greedy, but I need more.” He ran his knuckles up and down my arm. I shivered. His hands rested on my hips then he lowered his head and pressed his face into my hair. “I didn’t expect you when I came here, Freckles. This was supposed to be a routine job, yet now it’s much more.”
I leaned against him, wanting to ease the pain in his voice even though I didn’t know how. “But I’m with Eirik.”

“He’s not right for you.” His voice was low, intense.

“I’ve known him all my life. He understands me.”

“Does he make you tremble with a touch?”  He ran the tips of his fingers up my bare arm, his touch feather light, yet it lit a fire inside me. I closed my eyes, my entire body trembling. He lifted hair from my neck, lowered his head, and pressed a kiss on my exposed neck. Warmth pulsed through me. “Is he the first person you think about when you wake up in the morning and the last one you think about before you fall asleep?”

  2. Ooooo Norse mythology? LOVE THAT ELLEN! That's enough to make me overlook the love triangle situation with Eirik and Torin. I can tell already I'm going to be rooting for Torin though, boy rides a harley. That's all I need to know:)
