Part law enforcement. Part criminal. And all deliciously bad…
Working undercover as part of an elite team of Rangers disguised as the Smokin’ ACES biker gang, Timothy Santos walks the thin line between law-enforcer and law-breaker. With one of his informants missing—and possibly dead—at the hands of vicious cartel leader El Brujo, Santos will do whatever it takes to find justice. Even if it means heading to Rio County to look up his former lover…who’s not only the sheriff, but Santos’s only lead.
Rose Renwick is not happy to see Santos. In the past, their chemistry had been explosive—raw, sensual, and unforgettable—but she’d been burned. Now Santos is back in town, looking just as lethal and as irresistible as she remembered. But Santos wants something from her—and suddenly Rose’s family is in danger and her town is under attack. The only way out is to trust the one man she swore never to trust again. Ante up…

with Author Kay David

Hi Kay, thank you so much for stopping by today.  It’s great to have you.
Thank you for the opportunity.  I’ve been reading some killer YA books lately so I’m honored to be here.  BTW, YA authors get the best covers!  I’m jealous even though I have to admit, my cover for TEXAS HOLD’EM is pretty awesome, too.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’ve lived in Texas all my life, except for brief periods of time I’ve spent overseas.  I’ve lived in Argentina, and Bolivia, as well as the Middle East.  They’re all fascinating places but Texas is home!

I’ve been a writer since high school and all the way through college.  In fact, afterI sold my first book, my dad gave me a little piece of paper that had been folded about ten times and stapled in the middle to make a book.  On the front I’d printed “My First Book.”  He’d been holding onto it for years, said I wrote it when I was just a kid.  It was about a pony!

I love to spend time by the pool with a good book when I’m not on deadline!

Where did you get your idea for the The Smokin’ ACES series, and how many books are planned in the series?
TEXAS HOLD’EM came from several different places in my mind, as do all my books.  I will say a piece of art work started it, though.  I was pounding away on the treadmill one day and I saw a graphic of a motorcycle rider holding a gun. I wondered, “Good guy or bad guy?” and the rest is history, as they say.

TEXAS HOLD’EM is my first Entangled Suspense novel and it will be followed shortly by two more in the same series.  I’d love to continue the series after these three books.  All the ACES officers deserve to have their story told!

Describe Timothy Santos in 3 words?
Dangerous, dark, and deadly

Is the story based on your own experience and/or people you know, or is it purely fictional?
I had an interesting encounter with a motorcycle rider while I was still in high school.  He pulled up beside my car and invited me to go to with him to parts unknown.  I was an innocent kid from a small Texas town so naturally I was tempted.  Then I thought about how my father would track me down and what would ensue after that.  That was all I needed to make me decline, and I shook my head. I think I could safely say TEXAS HOLD’EM was partially based on that.

What is your favorite scene or quote from Texas Hold ‘Em?
My favorite scene is one of the last ones, where the bad guy (or at least one of them!) faces the consequences of his behavior.  It has a lot of action and was fun to write.

Can you tell us three things about yourself that people would be surprised to know?
I live in a high rise on the 18th floor.  The view out my office is fascinating.  Yesterday I saw a hawk being chased by a smaller bird.  Too cool.

I have a brother in a famous Country Western band who plays the steel guitar.  They just went to Scotland for a gig.  CW music is huge overseas right now.  Who knew?

I wish I could sing.  That will never happen.

I see you have written over thirty-five romantic suspense novels.  Do you have a character in your books that has been your favorite to write?  What about a character that has been your most challenging?
I truly love the series I’m writing right now, and I must say that Timothy Santos, the hero in TEXAS HOLD’EM was major fun.  He’s just so hot!

On the different side of the same coin, the bad guy in the Smokin’ ACES series is hard to write because he’s mysterious, not who the reader will think he is, and a tough character to depict since the reader never gets to hear what’s in his head until the last book in the series.

What TV show/movie/book is your guilty pleasure?
I love to read apocalyptic fiction!  Any story where the world as we know it is falling apart will hook me without question.  I’ve recently discovered Game of Thrones and I can’t get enough of that.

I’m also watching The Killing.  It’s a wonderful television series that’s equally addictive.

What is next on your to read list?
I just bought the new Joe Hill mystery.  He’s only had two books out so far but they were great.

Also THE PROPHET by Amanda Stevens.  Fortunately for me, Amanda is in my critique group so I get to read the books in her Graveyard Queen before they’ve even been published but THE PROPHET is out right now and I’m going to read it again!

What’s next for you writing wise that you can share with us?
FOLLOW THE COWBOY is the next Smokin’ ACES story.  It will be out in November of this year.  After that comes WILD CARD. I’d love to do more in the series because all of the characters deserve their own stories!

My Review:  Texas Hold 'Em is an action packed romantic suspense that is will keep you turning the pages in anticipation of what is going to happen next.  I don't read a lot of romantic suspense, which is something I am going to have to remedy, because I thoroughly enjoyed this book.  The plot is enthralling, the characters are fantastic, and the romance is hot.  Timothy Santos is a Texas Ranger who is sexy as sin.  He's always been a badass, but now that he is undercover, he's a dangerous one that oozes with hotness.   He and his team have been undercover as a motorcycle gang, and their case has brought them to the county of Rio Texas, where Rose Renwick, his former lover, is sheriff.  Rose is presence all her own and force to reckoned with in her own right, something Santos knows oh too well.  Circumstances force them to work together again and they soon discover that that burning passion, chemistry, and feelings they once had are still there. Will the lies, secrets from the past, and the danger situation they currently find themselves in bring them back together or drive them further apart?

Texas Hold 'Em is a thrilling, romantic, and suspense story that will grab your attention from beginning to end.  If you love romantic suspense, then you will most certainly want to check this out.  If you haven't read this type of story in a while or have never read romantic suspense, then Texas Hold 'Em is a great book to wet your appetite or rekindle your love for this genre.  This is my first book by Kay David and I am most definitely looking forward to reading more from this author.
