When Gage discovers that the alluring woman before him is the key to his latest acquisition, claiming her as his suddenly doesn't seem quite so cut-and-dried. To get what he wants, he must get to know the fierce woman willing to face him down—as she steadily steals his heart.

“Tell me your name.”

A shiver runs down my spine at the
commanding, deep voice that sounds in my ear. I keep myself still, trying my
best not to react considering we’re surrounded by at least a hundred people,
but oh, how I want to.

If I could, I’d throw myself into the arms
of the man who’s standing far too close to me.
He’s demanding to know my name as if I owe him some sort of favor, which
I can’t help but find hot.
Irritating, but hot.

“Tell me yours first,” I murmur in return,
turning my head in the opposite direction, so it appears I’m not even talking
to him. He stands behind me, tall and broad, imposing in his immaculate black
suit and crisp white shirt—the silvery tie he wears perfectly knotted at his
throat.

I might not be looking at this very
moment, but I’d memorized everything about him the moment I first saw him not
an hour ago. He’d drawn plenty of attention without saying a word, striding
into the room as if he owned it, casting that calculating gaze upon everyone in
attendance. Looking very much like the mighty king observing his lowly
subjects—until his eyes lit upon me.

He watched me for long, agonizing minutes.
Butterflies fluttered in my stomach as I felt his hungry eyes rake over my
body, and for a terrifying moment I wondered if he could see right through me.
I shifted the slightest bit, inwardly cursing myself for coming tonight, but I
held firm. I refused to react.
I still refuse to react.

“You don’t know who I am?” He sounds
amused at the notion, and I’m tempted to walk away without a word. My earlier
nerves evaporate, replaced by a steely spine and an even steelier attitude.
He’s so confident, so arrogant, I’m sure he believes he has me.

He doesn’t know who he’s dealing with
then, does he?

We’re at a local wine- and
brewery-tasting, and I’m here representing the bakery my family owns. The one I
was recently allowed to take over and run since I’d graduated college. The
business they all believe is going to fail. So
why not give it to Marina? She can’t screw it up too badly.

That’s what I overheard my father telling
my uncle. The memory of his words still cuts straight to the bone.

Finally I chance a glance at the man
behind me, drinking in his thick brown hair tinged with gold, the way it
tumbles across his forehead, his twinkling green eyes, the faint smile that
curves his full lips. The combination gives him a boyish appearance. It’s a
complete illusion because there is nothing boyish about this virile man before
me.

“Perhaps you can enlighten me.” I offer a
carefree smile and turn to face him, the nerves returning tenfold when he takes
a step toward me, invading my personal space. His scent hits me first: clean
and subtle, a mixture of soap and just . . . him. No
cologne that I can detect.

Rather unusual. Most of the men I know
slather themselves in expensive scents all with the purpose of drawing us silly
women in. Instead, they end up choking us.

With the exception of this man. I find the
uniqueness refreshing.

A slow smile appears, revealing perfectly
straight white teeth. “Gage Emerson.” He thrusts his hand toward me. “And you are . . .?”

He’s not very subtle. And he’s exactly who
I suspected, not that I had any real doubt. The very man who recently bought up
what feels like half of the Napa Valley, all in the hopes of turning it around
and selling it to God knows who just to earn a hefty profit.

Not caring in the least that he’s forever
changing the landscape of the very place I’ve grown up in. And devastating my
family in the process.

“Marina Knight,” I say. God, I sound
breathless, and I want to smack myself. I’m not here tonight because of him. I
came for other reasons. To promote the family bakery, to mix and mingle with
local business owners, many I consider friends. My life in the Napa Valley is
all I know.

And this gorgeous man standing in front of  me is trying to take what I know away from me for good.

My Review:  Marina Knight has graduated college and taken over managing the bakery, one of the businesses owned by her family.  Marina has never felt like her family took her seriously and really wants to do well, proving to her family that she indeed is the businesswoman that she desires to be.  After the economic crises hit, Marina's family took a big loss, and have had to sell off a good bit of personal property.  Unfortunately, one of the prime strips of real estate her family owns happens to include the bakery that Marina loves. The person who has been buying up prime real estate in the area and who wants the strip the bakery is in, is billionaire and business tycoon Gage Emerson.  Determined to protect her family and their assets, Marina embarks on a plan to put Gage Emerson in his place and save her family's business.  What she didn't expect was the way she would react to the just the site of Gage Emerson, and his touch, well, it just about did her in.

Gage Emerson is a commanding presence and when he walks into a room, he owns it.  He knows what he wants and he isn't afraid to go after it.  When he sees Marina, he is drawn to her, even though she isn't the typical type of woman he usually seeks out.  She's young, beautiful beyond reason, and carries herself in a way that has Gage wanting to consume her.  The chemistry between them is off the charts and they both can feel it.  This is confusing to both of them, and as strong as the chemistry is, so also is the angst and animosity between them.  Gage manages to offend Marina, and she quickly lets him know what she thinks of him.  When he figures out who she is, he attempts to apologize, and Gage and Marina find themselves in the throws of a passion so great it catches them both off guard.  Neither want a relationship, Marina has the business to think about and Gage has his plans, not to mention the "bet" he made with his friends Archer and Matt.  However,......the heart wants what the heart wants, and the physical attraction is like an all consuming fire, but business is business and sometimes even with the best intentions, things tend to turn around and bite you in the butt, no matter how hard you try.  Will love win or is the love of money to big an obstacle for these star-crossed lovers to overcome.

I really enjoyed Torn.  The romance is hot and Gage Emerson brings the sizzle to the story for sure.  The book is a light, easy read that is entertaining, fast-paced, and has some really hot scenes that will get your blood pumping, while providing you with that guy that melts your heart and your panties in the process.  Torn is the second book in the Billionaire Bachelor Club Series.  I have not read the first book yet, but this didn't affect my enjoying Torn at all. and it can easily be read as a standalone.  That said however, I will be going back and reading Crave.   The main characters from Crave, Ivy and Archer, are also seen in Torn, and I definitely want to read their story, and Ivy is Gage's little sister while Archer is his best friend.  I enjoyed watching the relationship and the romance between Gage and Marina develop as the book progressed, and Monica Murphy definitely brought on the steam.  The ending was very good and left me feeling completely satisfied with where the story went.  If you are looking for a fun, hot contemporary romance, then Torn fits the bill.  I look forward to the next book in the series.

  2. I have to be honest, I'm a little tired of these billionaires but I do love the excerpt and the graphic arts you included with your post. I love the name Gage, if I were to pick this one up that will be the main reason why. Shallow I know :D

  3. Hell yeah! I was torn when I started dating my best friend's brother. I really REALLY liked him, but after a couple of months, my best friend asks me not to go out with his brother any more because he was in love with me and he just couldn't handle it D: It was a real shock and it torn me in two! But at the end I couldn't stand between them so I stoped seeing them both :(
