Evanescent (Broken #2)
by Carlyle Labuschagne
Published:  11/16/13

Her fall has just begun. Only his touch can save her from the shift that could destroy it all.

Within my blood runs a thing our kind calls the Shadowing Disease. It shadows over, and bends everything to its will. When the first blood- shift came, it tore through flesh and blood, threatening to bend me, break bone, shatter my mind and entrap my heart with its honeyed, seductive poison. It came with vicious intent, moving my thoughts and altering me forever. The shift has caused a rift within me. No one was safe when it entrapped me in its claws of foul lust. But I have the only antidote against the evil that becomes me – his touch alone has the power to release the spurs of sweet darkness that clung on for dear life. I knew what I had to do; the desperation pulled my mind with the deep determination of a hungry predator. By the time the revelation raised me from the dark dungeon of my bounds – it might have been too late.

My Thoughts:  Evanescent is the second book in Carlyle Labuschagne's Broken Series.  We were first introduced to Ava and Troy in The Broken Destiny, and their story continues in Evanescent.  Ava finds herself in a dark, dark place, darker than she could have ever imagined.  As the Shadowing Disease threatens to overtake her as she faces the darkness of her destiny, she also must face the reality that she may lose herself in the process.  The only light, the only thing that can even touch her is him, the one she loves.  Ava knows she doesn't have much time before the darkness envelops her completely, but she also knows she has to try to stop the evil Enoch in order to protect those she loves, so she fights, with Troy's help, but will it be too little too late.

Evanescent is a mixture of fantasy, science fiction, and romance, and also has a suspenseful and thrilling, and a bit of a dystopian  side to it.  As the story begins you find yourself right in the middle of the turmoil that is going on in and around Ava.  The things she is seeing, feeling, experiencing is almost overwhelming.  The one constant that she has to hold onto is Troy.  Ava experiences total brokenness in Evanescent, in every way, and the fight she fights is one of the hardest that she will ever encounter.  She also has to come to terms with what she is so she can unravel the knowledge that is hidden within the secrets of her past, something she fears, but something that is also crucial.  Troy, well, Troy is the hottie that makes the book, and I just love everything about him.  There is so much more buried within him that meets the eye.

The story picks up where The Broken Destiny leaves off.  The world and the story that Carlyle Labuschangne has created is one that is filled with imagery, romance, with twists and turns around every corner that will keep you on your toes and anxious to see what is going to happen next.  If you love high fantasy, science fiction, and dystopia, mixed with romance and a whole lot of action, then Evanescent is something you should consider checking out.  I can't wait to see where Carlyle Labuschagne takes the story in the next installment.
