Review: Rush by Nyrae Dawn

RUSH
by Nyrae Dawn
Published:  May 6, 2014
Publisher:  Forever Yours

Brandon Chase has always defined himself by one thing: football. Tough and athletic, he is a great college player who enjoys the hard hits and the sweaty grind of the gridiron. But when Brandon is injured, only one person can help him get back on track-a forbidden love he's desperately tried to put behind him.

Alec Andrews has never quite forgiven Brandon for walking away when their friendship turned into something more. But he can't deny help to one of his closest friends. As the two spend the long, hot summer working together, their old attraction comes flooding back.

Now as Alec thinks about coming out to his conservative family and Brandon considers revealing he's a gay football player, the two men must be strong to fight for a love that could be the greatest rush of their lives.

My Thoughts:  Rush is a beautifully depicted M/M romance, and the first M/M romance I've ever read.  Nyrae Dawn has done an excellent job of making the characters, Alec and Brandon, be not only likable, but real..... guys who could be your best friend, your brother, the guy next door.  The author has done a fantastic job of personalizing the characters, enabling the reader to get to know them, root for them, and love them.  This NA romance is not about a lot of sex, though there is some sex, but it is very well done.  For me, it was more about people, relationships, the challenges faced in a relationship, even more so in a gay relationship.  The guys don't fit your stereotypical gay male that so many misinformed people have created in their imaginations.  Brandon and Alec are all male, guys who love sports, working out, and just having fun.  They face the struggles that normal college guys would face - Brandon related to healing from his injury and his football career, and Alec is just trying to complete college and make a living while dealing with the expectations of his father.

Nryae Dawn also does an excellent job depicting the guys families, one whose family is supportive and loving, and the other 's who is hateful and judgmental.  Torn between what they want, what they need, and what is expected of them, both Brandon and Alec struggle with coming out, being accepted, and what the future holds for them both.  Rush is a gripping story that is wonderfully written and in my opinion, even though it is fiction, it is an excellent tool in educating people about others who may not make the same choices they make, yet are people just the same....people that should and can be loved and supported.  Rush is also the perfect book to start with for those who have never read M/M romance.  I was very impressed with Rush and I most definitely would recommend it.

About the author:
Writing has always been Nyrae Dawn's passion. Nyrae gravitates toward character-driven stories.

Nyrae resides in sunny Southern California with her husband (who still makes her swoon) and her two awesome kids.

When she's not with her family, you can be pretty sure you'll find her with a book in her hand or her laptop and an open document in front of her. Nyrae also writes adult romance under the name Kelley Vitollo.

She loves going on emotional journeys with characters whether it be reading or writing. And yes, she's a total romantic at heart and proud.
