The Dare (The Bet #3)
by Rachel Van Dyken
Expected Publication Date:  July 8, 2014

From #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Rachel Van Dyken, comes the third and final book in the New York Time's Bestselling Bet Series...

Boring Beth Lynn has always lived up to her nickname... until she wakes up in a hotel bed next to a sexy as sin state senator she re-connected with at a wedding the previous night.

The biggest problem? She can't seem to remember anything about the night before except for crying into a box of cookies, and she's pretty sure Grandma Nadine slipped something in her drink. And what should have been a one night stand turns into a six day adventure when Grandma whisks them off to Hawaii to save them from the ensuing media firestorm.

Jace isn't looking for commitment -- he believes he made that clear when he left the wedding with Beth. Then again, he can't remember much of anything other than the way her skin felt beneath his hands. Now he's stuck with her at some lame couple's retreat and trying his hardest to fight the attraction only a woman like Beth could invoke.

He doesn't think it can get any worse.

But one spider attack... A donkey ride from hell... And an unfortunate episode with Viagra tea -- and there's one thing Jace knows for sure: He should never have agreed to Grandma Nadine's suggestion in the first place.

Because if this isn't paradise, and it isn't a vacation -- that only leaves one option.

But to make it through alive... they might lose their hearts in the process.

My hand trembled just slightly as I squeezed Beth’s shoulder. “And I’ve been on vegetable strike since the fourth grade.”
“A rebel.”
“Oh yes. Every time my mom put carrots in my lunchbox, I swapped them with the girl sitting next to me. Cheetos and carrots? Same color. It helped that she was legally blind in one eye, plus she had a crush on me. I’d send her to get milk. She’d come back, and the Cheetos would be gone, leaving her with carrots. I lied for two years, Beth, I’m not proud of what I did. But sometimes a man has to do things, ugly things, to get what he wants.”
“You stole Cheetos from a blind girl. How does that not make the news and me walking with you into a hotel does?”
“Easy.” I grinned. “You’re prettier.”

My Thoughts:  I love Rachel Van Dyken so I couldn't wait to read her latest release, The Dare and OMG, I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this book.  I would have to say that in my opinion it is probably the "bool world equivalent" of a blockbuster romantic comedy movie.  In fact, I think if someone would make this into a movie, they could make a killing.  The Dare can be read easily as a standalone.  You get to see the other characters in the previous novels of The Bet Series, but it definitely isn't necessary to read them, unless you just want to pamper yourself in joyful humor.

Beth AKA "Boring Beth," is anything but that in the eyes of "Mr. Senator"  AKA Jace.  In fact, he's had a major thing for her since high school when they shared a mind-blowing kiss.  Little does he know, that Beth not only remembers, but was ruined for other men by that mind-blowing kiss in high school also.  Beth is hilarious.  I loved her, her personality, she is one of those characters that you automatically connect with.  At 30, she has pretty much given up on the "fairy tale," resigning herself to making a life of her career and possibly becoming a "cat lady."  Jace is a Senator, for real.  He is 28 years old and I really enjoyed him also.  He's hot, funny, and sexy.  He has been burned in love before and is determined he's not going there again, especially when his ex brings in the media with lies.  The chemistry between these two is through the roof and it has just the right amount of steam mixed with humor that will just make your day.

"Beth."  His hoarse voice washed over my body, giving me chills.  His hoarse voice washed over my body, giving me chills.  "You're looking at it wrong.  The problem isn't your damn charge.  It's that you don't even realize you had it in the first place.  If you don't know what you have, how can you use it?  I call bullshit.  Why would you want to bond with another person's energy when you have your own?  Why bond when you're a continuous spectrum?"
"You used big science words."  Right, that's all I had after his speech.
Jace's eyes flashed with amusement.  "Sometimes.  It happens.  I did go to school you know."
"It was like dirty talk, only hotter."  I leaned in closer as his smile grew.....

Then, there is Grandma Nadine, who is the bomb on crack x 10...I loved, loved, loved her.  She has another plan for Beth and Nadine, which she subsequently executes.  The result of that plan and all that happens in the process is what you will find in this novel.  Rachel Van Dyken has done an exemplary job of display her wit, humor, and wonderful writing style in The Dare.  You will have a whole new appreciation for  "Thor" and Viagra after reading this also (that's all I can give you without spoiling it).

If you are a fan of contemporary romance and love romantic comedy, then The Dare is a definite "must read," and if you're not, I can pretty much guarantee you will be after reading this book.  Grab it  - it will definitely make your weekend.

Character Profiles:
Jace: Chris Hemsworths Doppleganger, Youngest Politician in Oregon State History, loves cigars and fine wine, has a killer smile, and can talk the pants off of anyone, anywhere, anytime. Over worked, overstressed, a heart of gold type personality that is constantly under fire considering he's in the limelight all the time. He still mourns the one who got away and is easily drugged and manipulated by Grandma nadine.

Beth: Chemist, self proclaimed number one follower of all things Vampire Diaries, sarcastic, insecure, loves wine and has a weakness for boxed cookies. She's never had a one night stand, until she meets Jace, and is loyal to a fault. She's always dreamed of the fairy tale and still mourns the loss of the boy who kissed her at prom only to run away and never come back again. Oh and she's undecided when it comes to voting, something Jace isn't necessarily a fan of.
