FIERCE Cover
Fierce by L.G. Kelso
Tori’s MMA career was taking off, until she beat the wrong man. Her training partner, nursing a bruised ego, snapped—shattering her trust and confidence.Three years later, Tori’s keeping her fists to herself as she struggles to put herself through college. But when a group of gangbangers hassle her at work, old habits kick in and her fists fly. Max Estrada, a frequent diner customer, steps in and gets them out of hot water, but Tori is still fired… days before tuition is due.
With no other option, she’s forced to take a desk job at her old pounding grounds, where her demons still haunt the cage and the temptation to go glove-to-glove with familiar pro-fighter, Max Estrada, is too much. The sexy Colombian draws her back into the world of MMA and revives her dreams of becoming a professional face-puncher—until Will, her old partner and current Middleweight Champion, struts back into the gym. The secret they share is an unexpected liability to his career, and he’s determined to keep her silent.
With her life on the ropes, Tori will have to face the past for a shot at winning back her future, or carry the weight of a loss even greater than before.

My Thoughts:  I love books about MMA fighters, well male MMA fighters, and Fierce has just that, but it also has something that is new to me, a female main character who is an MMA fighter.  Tori's career as an MMA fighter couldn't have been better until an incident happened with her training partner, a guy she trusted, a guy she cared deeply for, causing her to have major doubts about herself, along with major trust issues.  This ultimately resulted in her giving up and getting away from MMA altogether.  She wanted normal, or at least she thought she did.  It's been 3 years since she's set foot in a gym or had anything to do with MMA. She is working as a waitress, trying her best to get through college, struggling to make ends meet.  She meets Max Estrada and finds herself very attracted to him.  A series of events occur that result in her taking a job back in her uncle's gym, where she finds that sexy Max Estrada is also training at.  Being at the gym, around the life she loved again, forces Tori to face her fears and she must decide if she is going to rise above them, or let them continue to control her......her life, her relationships, and her future.

Tori is a great female lead.  I really wasn't sure whether I was going to like her or not, because I didn't think I'd be able to connect with the 5 foot 11 inch woman who was tough as nails, but I really did end up loving her.  I mean fighting, especially going up against men, I kind of had the misconception that she was some sort of female Thor or something, and boy was I wrong.  Yes she's tall, but she is also beautiful.  Yes she's tough, but she's also tender on the inside and wants to be loved like any other girl does.  She has her ups and downs, just like the rest of us, and she faces many of the same struggles other girls to.  She just also happens to be a kick-butt fighter.  The title of the book, Fierce, describes her perfectly, because Fierce is exactly what she is.  Max Estrada, the male main character and love interest is one of those hot to die for guys who you can't help but love everything about.  There are also quite a few secondary characters who also add a lot to the story as well, and then there is the guy you love to hate, and hate him I did.

I enjoyed watching the romance develop between Max and Tori, and the story itself kept me turning the pages from beginning to end.  If you love contemporary romance, especially of the MMA variety, then I think you will really enjoy Fierce.  If you like books with strong female leads, then you most definitely will enjoy Fierce.  While I had my reservations, I found myself totally enjoying this book and Fierce is something I most definitely would recommend checking out.

Quotes:
“You do it because you like the creativity, and yet it's logical, like a science. You do it because it's your way of life. You do it because you love it and you can't not do it, because it's who you are."
My words clung to the steam around me, leaving whispering trails that echoed far beneath my skin, echoed deep in my bones. "At least, that's why I did it.”

“I screwed up and allowed the ache to guide me as I opened the door and stepped inside.
The music hit my ears first, but then the moan of fractured air and impact emerged through the beat.
Adrenaline spiked in my blood; my skin flushed. In two seconds, all of it rushed back. The nerves, the excitement, the adrenaline, the crave of the endorphin rush. I closed my eyes and listened.
Babam babam.
Fast hard, fast hard. Maybe a jab cross jab cross. Bam bam bam. Hard hard hard. Maybe a jab cross hook. Baba Bam. Fast fast hard. Undoubtedly, it echoed a jab jab cross.
Deja vu engulfed me. The place had grown a lot, but the smell and noises were the same, and oh, they were so good. Sweat. Hardwork. Energy. Adrenaline. Not the clean pristine air from outside, and God, it was so much better.”
