Arriving in New Orleans in 1722, Original vampire siblings Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah Mikaelson believe they've escaped their dangerous past. But the city is lawless, a haven for witches and werewolves unwilling to share territory. The siblings are at their mercy…especially after Klaus meets the beautiful and mysterious Vivianne. Her impending marriage is key to ending the war between the supernatural factions—and Klaus's attraction to her could destroy the uneasy alliance. As Elijah works toward securing a piece of the city for his family, and Rebekah fights her unexpected feelings for a French captain, will Klaus's volatile desires bring their world crashing down—and tear them apart for good?

My Thoughts: I love the Vampire Diaries so I was excited to see The Originals story in print. If you are familiar with the television series, we are introduced to Elijah, Klaus, and Rebekah in the Vampire Diaries. As Originals, they are the "first" vampires ever created, having extreme power and can do things that other vamps can't. Klaus is portrayed to be the most scary and powerful vampire, whereas Elijah is the more reasonable and level-headed of the two. There is also a television series entitled "The Originals," in which these three are the main characters.
In this installment, The Rise, the author takes you back to 1700's, when the originals first came to New Orleans, and also introduces Vivianne, Klaus' love interest, who is half were-wolf and half witch. The story is told from Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah's point of view, which was especially interesting. The television series features mostly modern day with flashbacks in time, whereas this novel is completely centered in the 1700s, allowing you to really get to know the characters and their history. I especially enjoyed Klaus and Vivianne's story, and actually liked Klaus, whereas I have always considered him to be more of an evil villain.
If you are a fan of The Vampire Diaries and/or The Originals, I think you will really enjoy this book. The Originals: The Rise is a historical paranormal romance that kept my interest from beginning to end and is something that fans of this genre will most definitely enjoy. I know that I am looking forward to reading the next installment in the series.
