He’s a fighter who never loses, but is he tough enough to win her heart?

There was a time when I had everything–a wonderful family, a bright future. Love. But all that was taken away in a single night, torn from me like flesh from bone. Since then, I’ve hidden away in my second-choice job as a makeup artist. But I prefer it that way, actually. I’m comfortable in the shadows, where no one can see my scars.

Kiefer Rogan literally took my breath away the moment I met him. MMA champion-turned-actor, notorious playboy, charming to a fault—he’s everything I vowed to avoid.

But he just wouldn’t stop until I opened up and let him in. Maybe I should’ve tried harder to resist him. Maybe I shouldn’t have fallen in love with him. Because I, of all people, know that everyone has secrets. Scars. And that they’re usually ugly and painful and destructive to the people we love most.

I just never guessed that they could be deadly, too.

My Thoughts:  Tough Enough is the second book in M. Leighton's Tall, Dark, and Dangerous series, and is Rogan's and Katie's story.  We met Rogan in Strong Enough, as we watched Jasper and Muse's story unfold.  If you read Strong Enough, then you know it was a very dark, dangerous, and suspenseful romance from pretty much beginning to end.  That said, I was expecting Tough Enough to fall into the same story line, but it couldn't have been more different.  Keifer Rogan is an MMA fighter who is sexy as sin, charming, a playboy, and now is trying his hand at acting.  Oh, did I mention he is also former special ops.  He's used to being in the limelight and plays his role well, but he has deep dar, secrets that are at the core of everything he has become.......secrets that have scarred him, and have resulted in choices that threaten his future and the future of those he loves.  Katie happens to be the makeup artist on the set where Rogan is filming.  She has her own story, one which is utterly heartbreaking.  She's managed to pick herself up and survive, but she's far from living, more just kind of managing to exist day by day.  She to is scarred by her past, her wounds much more visible both inside and out than those that Rogan suffers.  Nevertheless, they are kindred spirits, something they both discover as their relationship progresses.

Now I know I said Tough Enough was the opposite of Strong Enough, and what I mean by that is that despite their pasts, a good part of Katie and Rogan's story is sweet, and has a sort of fairy tale feel to it at times.  That isn't to say that there aren't the hard, heartbreaking parts, because there are, but a good portion of the book just seems like a romance where Prince Charming finds Cinderella and tries to convince her that she's the princess he sees her as.  Now when things start to get down and dirty, the elements of danger, suspense, and that thrilling edge of your seat vibe kicks in towards the latter third of the book.  Events, people, and places connect to solve the mystery that began in Strong Enough, so don't worry, M. Leighton will definitely give you your fix of action, suspense, hot sexy romance, and an alpha male to fall in love and/or lust with that we've all come to expect in her stories.  Tough Enough is a great addition to the Tall, Dark, and Dangerous series and one contemporary romance fans will enjoy.
