Review: Defending Hayden by L.P. Dover from Loveswept
(Second Chances #7)
by L.P. Dover
Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes and Noble
The Carolina Cougars keep fighting for love as the Second Chances series from bestselling author L. P. Dover continues! In Defending Hayden, a damaged football star teams up with the only woman who can take the pain away.
No one’s tougher than Carolina Cougars linebacker Derek McLaughlin. But when a fatal car accident claims the life of his girlfriend, Derek finds himself caught in a destructive spiral of drugs, alcohol, and meaningless sex. But not even a string of one-night stands can ease the hurt. Football is all he has left. Then fate leads him back to the scene of the crash, and into the arms of a kind, gorgeous woman who sees past his façade to the man he once was . . . and can be again.
When a chance roadside encounter brings Derek into her life, veterinarian Hayden Hunter isn’t fooled by his bad attitude: All bark and no bite, he’s hiding a wounded heart beneath that gruff demeanor. And Hayden wants to be the one to kiss it all better. Soon they both find that a dose of passion is potent medicine. But when a hidden enemy lashes out at Hayden, Derek steps up to do what he does best: put his body on the line in the name of love.
My Thoughts: Defending Hayden is a beutifully written contemporary "second chance" romance. Derek McLaughlin is back in town to play with the Carolina Cougars after suffering the very difficult loss of his girlfriend in a car accident. His way of dealing with this loss was to loose himself in alcohol, drugs, and sex, none of which helped in the slightest. Now, he's ready to try to get his life back on track again, and as fate would have it, meets the beautiful new veterinarian in town, Hayden Hunter. One thing leads to another, and despite the obstacles, these two find themselves falling for each other.
When things start going wrong around the clinic where Hayden works, she suddenly finds herself faced with loosing it all. Finally, when it looks like Derek is going to get a second chance at love, which is something he thought he would never have, he finds himself face to face with danger, and that danger is threatening Hayden. Fierce and determined, he is willing to do whatever it takes to defend her.
I really enjoyed Defending Hayden. It was romantic, sexy, heartbreaking, and heroic, with some suspense and a little danger in the mix as well. It is a great romance to lose yourself in, and a perfect weekend read to entertain yourself with. Contemporary romance fans will want to check this one out.
